The active ingredient silicon dioxide/diatomaceous earth consists of the shells of fossil diatoms (also called diatomaceous earth), a naturally occurring form of amorphous (non-crystalline) silicon dioxide. The active ingredient causes the removal of cuticular fats and the dehydration of insects. Pests, such as the poultry red mite, become covered in dust caused by their own activity or from dust during the application.
